Ask JuristIQ about the matter's documents

An answer drawn from the matter's own documents and records, with cited sources you can check.

Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.

Early in a matter, or when a new batch of documents arrives, you need answers from the file before you have read all of it: who the parties are, when notice had to be given, what the change of control clause says. JuristIQ answers from the matter's own documents and records, and cites the passage behind each statement.

Two questions decide how you start. Is the material already in the matter, or do you have it in hand? And does the question need the whole file, or a few documents?

Start the chat in the matter

  1. Pick the matter in the scope selector at the top of the sidebar. A chat you start while the sidebar is set to a matter is connected to that matter: JuristIQ can search every document in it, however many there are.

  2. Open AI in the sidebar and choose JuristIQ. If an earlier chat is open, click New chat in the chat's toolbar to start a clean one.

Attach what the question is about

  1. To add documents you have in hand, drag them onto the JuristIQ page, or click the plus button under the question box and choose Upload files > From computer. iManage, SharePoint and NetDocuments pick files straight from the firm's document system; they are greyed out until the system is set up for the firm (see connect the firm's document management system).

  2. To point JuristIQ at particular records, choose Connections in the same menu. Tick the documents, timeline, board, insight or structure the question is about, and click Save. With the sidebar set to a matter, the list shows that matter's records; otherwise expand the group, then the matter.

  3. Check the bar above the question box before you send. Everything attached to this message is listed there, and you can remove an item you did not mean to include.

A message takes up to 10 files, counting uploads and documents ticked under Connections together. For more, put the documents in the matter and ask from the matter, as in the first step.

Ask the question

  1. Type one precise question. "List the seller's obligations between signing and closing, with the clause for each" gets a better answer than "Summarise this". Type / to pick a saved prompt, or choose Load from Prompt Bank in the plus menu.

  2. Turn on Web search in the plus menu only when the answer needs public information, such as published guidance or a news report. It is off in every new chat, and while it is off JuristIQ does not go to the internet.

  3. Press Enter to send. To stop an answer that is going the wrong way, click the stop button where the send button was, and rephrase.

Read the answer and come back to it

  1. JuristIQ lists the steps it took above the answer: the searches it ran and the documents it read. The answer carries numbered citations, with Sources underneath. Check them before the answer goes anywhere; check JuristIQ's answer against its sources shows how.

  2. Ask follow-up questions in the same chat. Documents attached earlier in the chat stay available to later questions, so you do not attach them again.

  3. To find a chat later, use Recent chats on JuristIQ's start page, or click Show Chat History in the chat's toolbar and search the list by title.

Where to start for each situation

Situation Start from Why
The documents are already in the matter The matter in the sidebar scope JuristIQ searches all of them, with no limit on how many
A few documents have arrived by email Upload files > From computer Quick for up to 10 files; they stay in the chat
The documents sit in the firm's document system Upload files > iManage, SharePoint or NetDocuments No need to save copies to your computer first
The question is about the chronology, the checklist or the group structure Connections: the timeline, board or structure The answer draws on the matter's own records, not only its documents

Tips from practice

  • Keep client documents in the matter, not in loose chats. The team finds them there, and every chat started from the matter can search them. See keep the matter's documents in order.
  • Scans need readable text. A document with no readable text is not searched, and JuristIQ says so under its search step. Make scanned documents searchable first.
  • Same questions across many documents? Fifty leases and the same five questions for each belong in a table: see review a set of contracts in a table.
  • Treat the answer as a draft. It is a fast first read of the file, not advice until you have checked it.

Next: check JuristIQ's answer against its sources, or draft a memo from the matter's documents. Working in a timeline, board or structure? Ask JuristIQ about the tool you have open.
