Set up the matter's front page
A matter overview with the widgets the team and the client need, set separately for managers, users and clients.
Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.
The matter overview is the first thing anyone sees when they open the matter. On a new matter it shows the standard layout from its group or your organisation. As the matter takes shape, you can fit it to the work: the deal team wants the checklist and the deal details at the top, the litigation team the chronology and the shared notes, and the client only what is useful to them.
Two questions decide the layout. Who opens this matter: the partner and associates, or the client as well? And what does each of them come to the matter for?
Open the layout editor
Open the matter and click Edit matter layout at the top of the overview. You see the button if you are a manager of the matter.
Choose whose view you are setting up with the tabs at the top: Manager, User or Client. Each role on the matter has its own layout, so the client's front page can be simpler than the team's.
If a tab is empty, click Start from default to begin from the default layout the matter inherits from its group or organisation, instead of a blank page.
Add and arrange the widgets
Click Add widget. The Add a widget window groups the widgets under Visualisation, Tasks & workflow, People and Resources, or search for one by name. Click a widget to add it. A widget that is already on this layout is not offered again.
Drag a widget to move it and drag its edges to resize it. The info icon on each widget says what it shows, and the cross (Remove widget) takes it off the layout.
If a widget needs setting up, such as Dashboard, click the gear icon (Configure widget) and choose what it shows.
Click Done to close the editor. Your changes are saved as you make them, so there is nothing else to save.
What the widgets are for
| Widget | What it gives the reader |
|---|---|
| Structure, Timeline, Insight | The matter's charts, chronologies and review tables |
| Project management | The task boards, with owners and deadlines |
| Deal details & parties | The deal's key terms and parties, filled in by hand or extracted from a term sheet or SPA |
| Dashboard | One dashboard from the matter or its boards |
| Team, Users | Who from the firm is on the matter, and everyone with access by role |
| Client Information | The client the matter belongs to |
| Documents, Links | The matter's files and the links the team has collected |
| Notes | Shared notes with replies, see keep shared notes on the matter |
| Activity log | Who changed what and when. It only shows to managers of the matter. |
A layout for each reader
| Who opens the matter | Tab | Widgets worth putting at the top |
|---|---|---|
| The partner and senior team | Manager | Team, Activity log, Notes, Project management |
| Associates doing the work | User | Project management, Notes, Documents, the Timeline or Structure they work in |
| The client | Client | Timeline, Project management, Documents |
| A deal team | Manager and User | Deal details & parties beside Project management |
Go back to the standard layout
If the layout no longer fits, click Reset to default in the editor. The matter drops its own layout and shows the group's or the organisation's layout again. Removing every widget from all three tabs and clicking Done does the same.
Your organisation's admins set the standard layout every matter starts from; see set what every matter overview shows.
Tips from practice
- Check the Client tab before you share. Look at what the Client tab holds before you give the client access, then use View as at the top of the overview to see the matter as a client sees it. See check what the client sees.
- Think twice about a Dashboard for the client. A Dashboard widget on the Client tab shows the client the whole dashboard, whatever they otherwise have access to. Juristic warns you when you add one there.
- Keep the Notes widget off the Client tab unless the notes are meant for the client. A Notes widget shows every note on the matter, including the team's internal ones, to whoever has it on their layout.
- One client, several audiences. Use New client view (the plus after the role tabs) when different people on the client side should see different things; see decide what clients see on a matter.
