Start a document from a firm template in Word

A new letter, memo or agreement opened from the firm's approved template.

Updated 13 October 2026.

You need to write the engagement letter for Project Alpha, a board memo for Beta Holding A/S or a first draft of a standard agreement. Starting from the firm's approved template, rather than from the last similar document on the shared drive, means the letterhead, styles and standard wording are current, and nothing from another client's matter comes along with it.

Open a template

  1. In Word, click Juristic Assistant on the Home tab. Any document can be open, including a blank one.
  2. Click Workflows at the bottom of the add-in, then Templates.
  3. Find the template you need. When the list is long, type part of its name under Search.
  4. Click the template, or Open beside it. It opens in Word as a new, untitled document; the firm's template itself stays unchanged.
  5. Save the new document under its own name and fill it in.

When the list is empty or out of date

  • "No available templates." means your firm has not added any templates to the add-in yet. Your administrator uploads them; see give the Word add-in the firm's templates and house style.
  • A template you were told about is missing: click the refresh button beside the Templates heading (Update list) to load templates added since you opened the list.
  • The Workflows tab is missing: the tabs at the bottom of the add-in come with JuristIQ access. Ask your administrator.

Tips from practice

  • Go back to the template each time. Copying last month's letter carries over the other client's names, dates and fee terms. A fresh document from the template carries over nothing.
  • Tell your administrator when a template is out of date. The list is the firm's, so one corrected upload fixes it for everyone.
  • Use the assistant on the new draft. Once the document is open, the Assistant tab can draft or rework clauses in it, and each change goes in as a tracked change you accept or reject.

To have JuristIQ work on the draft, see review a contract in Word with JuristIQ. For a document that arrived in someone else's format, put it into the firm's house style.
