Give timelines the firm's look
The firm's date format, opening view, event colours and timeline line for the chronologies everyone builds.
Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.
Every new chronology starts with Juristic's standard look: light blue events, a dark line and Juristic's date format. When chronologies go to clients, counsel and the court, the firm usually wants them to look like its own work, in its own colours and with dates written the way its lawyers write them. As an organisation admin, you set that once for everyone.
Two questions decide the settings. How should a date read in the firm's chronologies? And what should a new event look like before anyone has coloured it for an issue or a party?
Open the timeline defaults
- Open the menu under your name and click Admin panel. Under Tool defaults, click Timeline. The page, Timeline defaults, holds the settings for the firm's timelines.
Set how dates read and which view opens
Under Display, choose the Default date format. Choose the format your lawyers write in their briefs, such as DD.MM.YYYY or DD MMMM YYYY, so a chronology pasted into a pleading does not need its dates rewritten. It applies to timelines created from now on, and the team can still change it on a single timeline.
Under Default view, choose the Default timeline view: the view a timeline opens in when no one has asked for another. Linear lists the events in order, evenly spaced. Relative places each event by its date, so the gaps and clusters show. Table shows the events as rows, for checking and correcting. Someone who has already switched views opens timelines in the view they used last.
Choose the colours of a new event
Under Default event colours, click the swatch beside Background colour, Text colour and Border colour in turn and pick the colour. The preview under the three shows an event card as it will look. The colours are given to new events; events already on a timeline keep theirs, and anyone can still recolour a single event.
Set the line through the timeline
Under Timeline line, choose the Line colour and drag Line thickness between 1 and 8 pixels. The line colour is also used for the connectors in the relative view.
Under Relative timeline, drag Connector thickness to set how heavy the line from each event down to the timeline is. Both sections have a preview with your colours in it. In the relative view, every timeline in the firm is drawn with these settings, the existing ones too.
Save
When you change anything, a bar at the bottom says You have unsaved changes. Click Save. Reset takes the page back to the settings as they were last saved.
What each setting reaches
| Setting | What it changes | Timelines already built |
|---|---|---|
| Default date format | Timelines created after you save | Keep their own format |
| Default timeline view | The view a timeline opens in | Open in it too, unless the person chose another view |
| Default event colours | Events created after you save | Keep the colours they have |
| Timeline line and Relative timeline | The line and connectors in the relative view | Drawn with the new settings |
Tips from practice
- Keep the default event quiet. Teams colour events to mark issues, parties or disputed facts. A pale background with dark text as the default leaves the colours that mean something standing out.
- Check the preview for print. A chronology is often printed or shown on a projector. Text and background with plenty of contrast stay readable on both.
- Imported chronologies. When someone imports a chronology from Word or Excel and chooses Use organisation default styling, the events leave the file's formatting behind and take the firm's default styling instead. See import an existing chronology from Word or Excel.
For the firm's colours across the rest of Juristic, see put the firm's logo and colours on Juristic. The team turns the chronology into a PDF or slides in present the case chronology, and picks the view for the work in hand in choose the right view of the chronology.
