Make a version of the chronology for another reader

A separate copy to cut down for the client or an expert, with the master untouched, and old timelines archived.

Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.

The master chronology is the team's working document: every event, the working notes and the tags only the team understands. The client, an expert or the other side needs a version made for them, with less in it. Duplicate the timeline and cut the copy down, so the master stays whole. When the case is over, archive the timelines no one works on any more.

First decide what the reader gets: an export, or the timeline itself.

What the reader gets What to make
A PDF or slides No copy. Save the events as a story, or tick the events in the export dialog. See save the events for each issue as a story.
The timeline itself, to open and browse A duplicate, cut down for them, and shared from the copy. See share a chart or chronology outside the firm.
A version with events reworded or working notes taken out A duplicate, edited for them, so the master keeps the team's wording

Duplicate the timeline

  1. Open the matter and go to its timelines.

  2. On the timeline's row, click More (the three dots) and choose Duplicate.

  3. The copy appears in the same folder, with "(copy)" after the original's name. It has the same events, with their documents, people and tags, and the same notes on the timeline. The swimlanes, stories and collapsed date ranges are not copied; set up again in the copy the ones its reader needs. Later changes to the master do not reach the copy, and the other way round.

Cut the copy down for its reader

  1. Open the copy, click its name in the toolbar, and change Name to say who it is for: "Project Alpha: chronology for the expert". Click Save.

  2. Delete the notes on the timeline: hover over each note and click Delete.

  3. Clear the Note field on events that carry working comments. In the Table view, the Note column shows which events have one.

  4. Remove the events and tags the reader should not see. To change many at once, see change many events at once.

  5. Check who has access to the copy before you share it. A duplicate keeps the outside access the original had, so anyone outside the firm who could open the master can open the copy too. See review and end outside access.

Archive a timeline you no longer work on

  1. In the matter's timelines, click More on the timeline's row and choose Archive. A message confirms that the timeline is archived.

  2. The timeline leaves the list but nothing in it is deleted. To see it again, click Table settings (the three dots above the list) and tick Include archived. Archived timelines show greyed out; click one to open it, or choose Unarchive from its More menu.

Tips from practice

  • Change the facts in the master, then make the copy. A correction made in a copy stays in that copy. Settle the facts in the master first, and duplicate again when the reader needs a fresh version.
  • Name every copy after its reader. "For the client" and "for the expert" tell the team which version went where.
  • Archive rather than delete at the end of the case. An archived timeline is out of the way but complete, if the matter comes back.

To export a cut-down version rather than hand over the timeline, see present the case chronology.
