Organise a matter's work in folders
A long matter's structures and timelines sorted into folders, with copies made where a new version is needed.
Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.
A matter that runs for months collects work: the group chart before and after the reorganisation, a step plan for each alternative, a chronology per issue, the versions sent to the client. When the list on the matter runs to two pages, the team loses time finding the current one. Folders put it in order without moving anything out of the matter.
Two questions decide how you sort it. How does the team look for the work: by workstream, by stage, or by who it went to? And is this a new version, or the same piece of work in a new place?
Make the folders
Open the matter. On its overview, the Structure and Timeline boxes list the matter's structures and timelines. Each list has its own folders.
With the matter picked in the scope selector at the top of the sidebar, the sidebar's links to structures and timelines open the same lists on a full page. See find your way around Juristic.
Click the folder icon above the list (Create Folder), type the folder's name, such as "Before closing" or "Sent to client", and press Enter.
Click a folder's row to open it. A folder you create while inside another one is made inside it. The path under the list's heading shows where you are; click a name in it, or the first folder icon, to go back up.
Move the work in
Click More (the three dots) at the end of a structure's or timeline's row and choose Move to Folder.
Pick the folder in the tree and click Move to with the folder's name. To take something out of every folder, pick the top entry, which carries the matter's name, and click Move to All.
A folder has its own More menu: Rename, Move to Folder to put it inside another folder, and Delete.
Copy for a new version or another matter
To start a new version from the current one, choose Duplicate in the row's More menu. The copy lands next to the original with "(copy)" after its name; rename it to say what changed. The original stays as it was, so the version that went to the client is kept.
To reuse the work in another matter, choose Copy and move to and pick the matter under Matters. A copy goes into that matter; the original stays where it is.
Clear out what is finished
When a version is no longer current but must be kept, choose Archive in its More menu. It leaves the list without being deleted. To see it again, click Table settings (the three dots above the list) and tick Include archived; archived work shows greyed out, and Unarchive in its More menu brings it back.
To remove a folder, open its More menu and choose Delete, then decide what happens to what is in it.
You want Choose To drop the folder but keep the work Delete and keep contents: the work moves out of the folder To remove the folder and everything in it Delete including contents
Ways to sort a matter
| The matter | Folders that work |
|---|---|
| A reorganisation with alternatives | One folder per alternative, plus "Agreed" for the step plan the client chose |
| A dispute with several issues | One folder per issue, plus "Sent to counsel" for the versions that went out |
| A transaction | One folder per workstream, plus "Signing" and "Closing" |
Tips from practice
- Duplicate before you change what was sent. A chart or chronology that went to the client is a record. Work on a duplicate, and archive the old one when the new one goes out.
- Use the same folder names on every matter in the group. Colleagues moving between matters then know where to look.
- Deleting is for mistakes. For finished work, archive instead, so it is there when a question comes back.
Before this: file drafts into the right matter. When the whole matter is finished, see close and archive a finished matter.
