Trace ownership through the group

A company's owners and subsidiaries highlighted through every layer above a threshold you set.

Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.

You have the group chart for Project Alpha on screen and need an answer the chart only gives you after some arithmetic: who ultimately holds more than 25% of Gamma ApS for the beneficial ownership check, which companies Beta Holding A/S holds a majority in, or which holdings a change of control would reach. Structure does the arithmetic through every layer and highlights the result on the chart.

Two questions decide the settings. What threshold does the rule you are applying use? And how are the holdings on the chart stated: as exact percentages, or as bands such as 25-33.33%?

Before you start

Structure calculates from the ownership lines on the chart:

  • Only lines whose relationship is Ownership count. Other relationships, such as a loan or a management agreement, are left out of the calculation.
  • Each ownership line needs its percentage as the line's value. A line without a value counts as 0% and stops the trail there.
  • Indirect holdings are multiplied through each layer and added up where one owner holds through several routes. If Delta Capital Ltd owns 60% of Beta Holding A/S, which owns 50% of Gamma ApS, Delta Capital Ltd holds 30% of Gamma ApS.

If the chart came from the company register, see import a group from the company register and check the lines it drew before you rely on the figures.

Highlight the owners and subsidiaries

  1. Right-click the company you are asking about and choose Identify owners and subsidiaries.

  2. The Owners and Subsidiaries filters panel opens on the right, and the chart highlights the company's owners in one colour and its subsidiaries in another. Each highlighted element shows its direct or indirect percentage in a badge, so you can read the answer off the chart.

  3. Set Minimum shareholder percentage to the threshold you are applying, for example 25 for beneficial owners. The panel opens at 75%, so change it before you read anything off the chart. Owners and subsidiaries below the threshold, counted through every layer, drop out of the highlight straight away.

  4. If holdings on the chart are stated as bands, decide which end of each band to count. With Use upper bound in intervals on, which is how the panel opens, a holding of 25-33.33% counts as 33.33%; turn it off to count it as 25%.

  5. Choose what to show. Turn off Show subsidiaries when you only want the owners, or Show owners when you only want what the company controls. Show element in focus marks the company you are asking about. The colour next to each switch changes the highlight colour, which helps when the chart already uses green or red.

  6. To ask the same question about another company, click it on the chart. The highlight moves to that company with the same settings. If you change a line or a percentage while the panel is open, the highlight is recalculated.

  7. Click Close, or press Esc, to remove the highlight.

Settings for each question

What you are checking Minimum shareholder percentage Use upper bound in intervals Show
Beneficial owners for KYC or a register filing 25, which also catches an owner at exactly 25%, so check the rule for anyone on the line On, so no possible owner is missed Owners
Companies the client holds a majority in 50.01, because a holding of exactly 50% would otherwise count Off, so only a clear majority counts Subsidiaries
Who is reached by a change of control The threshold in the agreement Depends on the drafting Subsidiaries

See the direct holdings of one company

The highlight gives you the totals; Relationship information gives you the lines behind them.

  1. Right-click the company and choose Relationship information.

  2. The panel lists the company's Outgoing and Incoming lines, with the other element, the relationship and its value for each. For ownership lines, the outgoing lines are the company's own holdings and the incoming lines are its owners.

Use it to check a figure in the highlight: if an indirect percentage looks wrong, the cause is usually a missing value or a different relationship on one of these lines.

Tips from practice

  • The answer is only as good as the chart. A foreign owner that was never drawn, or a holding entered as a loan, gives a confident wrong figure. Check the top of the chart before you send the result.
  • Holdings stated as bands. Where the chart gives a band rather than an exact figure, run the check with Use upper bound in intervals on and then off: if an owner crosses the threshold only with the upper bound, say so in your advice, or ask the client for the exact figure.
  • Capital is not control. Structure adds up shareholdings. Voting rights that differ from capital, or control through a shareholders' agreement, are not in the figure, so look at the articles and agreements before you conclude who controls a company.
  • Record the threshold you used. When the result goes into a memo or a file note, state the threshold and how bands were counted, so a reviewer can run the same check.

Next, turn the owners of one company into a cap table with build the cap table from the chart.
