Give JuristIQ the firm's standing instructions

Custom prompts per tool that make the AI follow the firm's conventions for every user.

Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.

Every firm has conventions that a new associate learns in the first month: British spelling, defined terms with initial capitals, dates written out in full, no conclusions without a source. You can give the AI the same conventions once, for everyone, so lawyers stop repeating them in every chat.

One question decides where an instruction goes. Does it hold for all work, or only for one tool? Firm-wide rules go under All Tools; rules that only make sense in a structure, a timeline, a task board or a step plan go under that tool.

Write the firm-wide instructions

  1. Click Admin panel at the bottom of the sidebar, and under AI click Prompts. The Custom AI Prompts page lists a card for each tool. What you write here is added to the AI's instructions for every user in the organisation.

  2. Open All Tools and write the rules that hold everywhere. Keep each one short and checkable, one per line, for example: "Write in British English. Refer to parties by their defined terms, such as the Purchaser and the Company. Write dates as 3 March 2026."

  3. Click Save. The prompt needs at least 10 characters before Save becomes active. Once saved, the card shows Configured; while you have changes that are not yet saved, it shows Unsaved.

Add instructions for a single tool

  1. Open the card for the tool and write only what is specific to it. The tool's instructions are added to All Tools, so there is no need to repeat the firm-wide rules.

  2. Click Save, as for All Tools.

Card Where it applies An instruction that fits
All Tools Every AI chat, including JuristIQ and the Word and PowerPoint add-ins "Write in British English."
Structure The AI chat in a structure "Name each company with its full legal name and its country in brackets."
Timeline The AI chat in a timeline "Describe each event in one sentence, in the past tense, without characterising the conduct."
Board The AI chat on a task board "Start every task title with a verb, and name the responsible party."
Insight The AI chat in an Insights table "When you summarise the table, name the document each point comes from."
Word Plugin JuristIQ in the Word add-in "Follow the numbering and defined terms already in the document when you suggest wording."
Step Paper Splitting a transaction into steps and writing each step of a step plan "Name each step after the legal act, such as 'Contribution in kind' or 'Merger'."

Rules for step plans go under Step Paper.

Change or remove an instruction

  1. Open the card, edit the text and click Update. The button only becomes active when the text has changed.

  2. To stop using an instruction, open the card and click Delete. The AI stops following it from the next message anyone sends.

Tips from practice

  • Test it on real work. After saving, open a timeline or a draft and ask the AI something the rule should affect. If the answer ignores it, the instruction is probably too long or too vague.
  • No client details. Every user's AI reads these instructions, on every matter. Keep them to conventions, never names, matters or facts.
  • Practice-specific rules belong to the group. If only the disputes team writes chronologies in a particular way, put that rule on the disputes group instead: see set AI instructions for a practice group. A group's instructions do not show on the cards here.
  • Changes are logged. Each saved, changed or deleted prompt shows in the Audit log as Prompt created, Prompt updated or Prompt deleted.

Choosing the provider comes first: see choose where the firm's AI runs. For prompts that lawyers start a chat with, rather than rules the AI always follows, see save prompts the team reuses.
