Send the client a status report in Word

A Word report of where each item stands, on the firm's template, or a single task written up on its own.

Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 2 November 2026.

The client wants to know where the deal stands before the weekly call, or the partner wants a page to take into a steering meeting. The deal checklist board already holds the answer. The Word export turns it into a document you can send, on the firm's template.

Two questions decide what you export. Does the reader need the whole checklist, or only what is still open? And is it about the deal as a whole, or about one item?

Export the board

  1. Open the deal's board and narrow it to what the report is about. The export follows the filter and sort you have on the board, so filter to the open items, a workstream or one party's deliverables first if the client should only see those.

  2. Click Board in the board's toolbar, then Export. The menu has an Excel part and a Word part.

  3. Under Word, choose All columns. The report is a table of every column on the board, with a heading row for each task group and each subtask under its task.

  4. If your firm has more than one Word template, Choose a Word template opens with a thumbnail of each. Click the one that fits the reader and click Export. With a single template, the export uses it without asking.

  5. Wait for the download. The document is put together in the background, and it downloads when it is ready. With Include attachments on, it arrives in a ZIP with the files from the chosen Files columns; extract the ZIP to open the Word report.

  6. Open the file and read it through before it goes to the client. All columns means all of them, including any the team keeps for itself.

Send the supporting documents too

For a report on outstanding consents or approvals, the client may need the documents behind the tasks. Make this choice before choosing All columns under Word.

  1. In Board, then Export, turn on Include attachments. The switch appears only when the board has a Files column you can see.

  2. If the board has several Files columns, untick those the client should not receive. They are all ticked when you turn the switch on; unticking the last one turns it off.

  3. Choose All columns under Word, then choose the firm's template if asked. The attachment choice carries through to the template export.

  4. Extract the downloaded ZIP and check the report and the attached documents before you send them. With Include attachments off, the download is the Word document on its own.

If the export exceeds the attachment size or file-count limit, the error gives the total and the limit. Choose fewer Files columns or filter the board to fewer tasks, then export again.

Custom under Word produces the CP checklist without attachments, even when the switch is on. The switch also does not apply to Export to Word on a single task.

When the client should not see every column

All columns does not leave out columns you have hidden on the board. When the report needs only some of them, the internal notes column left out for instance, use Custom under Word instead. You choose the columns, their order and their headings, and the result is a numbered checklist table. See produce the CP checklist for the other side.

Write up a single task

Sometimes the client asks about one item: the status of a regulatory filing, or a consent that is holding up closing. Export that task on its own.

  1. Right-click the task on the board and choose Export to Word.

  2. Under Choose a template, pick the firm's template for a single task. Tick Include comments if the team's discussion on the task belongs in the document, and click Export.

The document holds every field of the task in a table, with the comments under it when you include them. If the dialog says no task export templates are available, ask your organisation admin to add one.

Which export for which reader

Who it is for Export Before you send it
The client, before the weekly call All columns, filtered to the open items Check that no internal column went with it
The partner, for a steering meeting All columns of the whole board Sort by status so the open items come first
The client, asking about one item Export to Word on the task Leave Include comments off unless the comments were written for the client
Counsel on the other side Custom under Word Choose the columns they should see

Tips from practice

  • Date the report. A status report is out of date the day after. Without a firm template, the document carries the board's name and the date of the export in its footer, and a firm template can print them too. If yours does not, put the date in the file name before you send it.
  • Keep internal columns internal. If the team writes notes on the board that the client should never read, use Custom for anything that leaves the firm, so the notes cannot go out by accident.
  • Check the attachment columns too. A column of working drafts may include documents the client should not receive. Untick it before exporting the report with attachments.
  • One template per audience. Your organisation admin can add several Word templates, for instance one for clients and one for internal use; see make board Word exports use the firm's template.

To see what is still open before you report on it, see find what is outstanding before closing. When the client wants a sheet to sort and add up instead, see hand the checklist over in Excel.
