Keep the matter's documents in order
The matter's documents in folders, each described and tagged, with its uses known before anything is deleted.
Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 14 October 2026.
Documents arrive throughout a matter: the client's first batch, the other side's disclosure, the signed versions at closing. The same documents sit behind events in the chronology, entities on the group chart and rows in an insight. Whoever picks up the matter next has to find them, and nobody should delete one that the timeline still relies on.
Two questions guide the housekeeping. Will a colleague find this document without asking you? And what in the matter relies on it?
Bring the documents into the matter
Open the matter. On its overview page, the Documents panel shows the matter's folders and files.
Drag the files from your computer onto the panel. Or click the upload icon (Upload documents), click Upload files or drag them into the window, and click Upload. The files go into the folder you have open in the panel.
If the documents sit in the firm's document system, bring them across from there instead: see add documents from iManage, SharePoint or NetDocuments.
Sort them into folders
In the Documents panel, click the new-folder icon at the top of the panel, type the folder's name and confirm. Folders named after the stages or the workstreams of the matter work best: "01 Client documents", "02 Disclosure", "03 Correspondence".
Drag a document onto a folder to move it there. Inside a folder, drag a document onto the folder path at the top of the panel to move it back out.
To find a file, type part of its title in the search box; it searches the folder you have open. The sort icon orders the files by Last modified, Name, Type or Date created, and the two buttons beside it switch between a grid and a list.
Describe and tag each document
A title says what a document is; a description says why it matters to the case. The description shows in the Document tool list and when a colleague opens the document.
Open the document where you work with it, for example from a citation in a JuristIQ answer. The Document information window opens.
Click Show document information. If the details show as a card, click the pencil on the card to edit them.
Write the Description, or click the sparkle icon in the field (Generate description with AI) to have JuristIQ draft one from the document's contents. Read the draft and correct it before you save.
Under Tags, click Add tags and pick a tag, or type a new one. Tags such as "Signed", "Privileged" or "From the other side" show on the document's row in the Document tool, so the team sees at a glance what each document is.
Click Save.
Check what relies on a document before you delete it
Set the scope selector at the top of the sidebar to the matter and open Document tool in the sidebar. If it is not there, click More and pin it. The list shows Your documents in the matter, with each document's description and tags.
Click Show uses on the document's row. A Used in window lists every structure, element, timeline, insight and task board that relies on it. If nothing does, Juristic says The document is not in use.
If you delete a document while something still uses it, from the Document tool or from the Documents panel on the matter's overview, Juristic stops and lists where it is used. Click Keep the block to leave it in place, or Delete anyway if you are sure.
| You want to | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Add documents, file them in folders, find one quickly | The Documents panel on the matter's overview | Drag and drop, folders and search in one place |
| Explain a document to the team | Document information | The description and tags travel with the document |
| Check what relies on a document before you delete it | Document tool | Show uses lists every place that uses it |
Tips from practice
- Show uses before you delete. The warning only appears once you click delete. Show uses in the Document tool tells you beforehand, so you can check with whoever built the timeline or the insight first.
- Title documents the way the team will search. The search boxes in the Documents panel and the Document tool look at titles, so "Share purchase agreement, signed 2026-03-14" is found where "Scan_0042" is not.
- Scans need readable text. A scanned bundle has no text for JuristIQ to search or describe until it has been through OCR: see make scanned documents searchable.
- Descriptions for every upload. Your admins can have Juristic describe each document as it is uploaded: see describe uploaded documents automatically.
Next: find a matter or document fast, or put the documents to work with ask JuristIQ about the matter's documents.
