Show billing figures on the matter overview
A Financials widget pulling costs and work in progress from the firm's billing system onto each matter.
Screenshots are taken from the app on every release. Updated 13 October 2026.
Partners want to see what a matter has cost so far and how much work is unbilled without leaving Juristic for the billing system. As an organisation admin, you connect the firm's billing system once and put a Financials widget on the matter overview, so every matter shows its own figures next to the boards and the chronology.
Two questions decide the setup. How does the billing system recognise a matter? Usually by the matter number. And who should see the figures? The team running the matter, not the client.
Before you start
Ask the firm's IT team, or the billing system's supplier, for an API the billing system offers with OAuth2 client credentials, and for these details:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| Base URL | The address of the billing system's API. It must start with https:// and be reachable from the internet. |
| Token URL | Where Juristic signs in to get access. |
| Path | The call that returns a matter's figures, added to the base URL, for example /api/v1/matters/costs. |
| Audience and Scopes | Only if the billing system's sign-in asks for them. |
| Client ID and Client secret | The credentials IT creates for Juristic. |
| The parameter name | What the billing system calls the matter identifier, for example caseIdentifier. |
Keep one real matter number from the billing system to hand for the test.
Add the Financials widget
Open the Admin panel from the bottom of the navigation sidebar and go to Layouts.
Choose the Manager tab, or the User tab if every lawyer on a matter should see the figures. Leave the Client tab alone: billing figures are for the firm.
Click Add widget. In the Add a widget window, choose API and click Financials.
On the new widget, click the gear (Configure widget). The window takes you through three steps: Connection, Parameters & test and Design.
Connect the billing system
Under API connection, choose Create new connection…. If someone in the firm has already connected the billing system, choose that connection instead and go on to step 8.
Fill in the New connection form with the details from IT. Give it a Name you will recognise later, such as "Production billing".
Under Request parameters, click Add parameter for each value the billing system needs to find the matter. Key is the parameter's exact name in the API, Label is what you see in Juristic, and Required stops the widget from calling the billing system without it. Click Next.
Match the matter to the billing system
For each parameter, choose its Source: where the value comes from on each matter.
Source Choose it when Matter number The billing system uses the same matter numbers as Juristic. This is the usual choice. Matter ID The billing system stores Juristic's own matter ID. Matter title The billing system looks matters up by name. Literal value The value is the same for every matter, such as an office code. Your layout is not tied to one matter, so type a real matter number from the billing system in Test value (for design / preview). It is used only for the test and for designing the card.
Click Test connection. Connection succeeded means the billing system answered; open Response preview to see what it sent back. If the test fails, the message says why, and you correct the connection in the Connection step.
Click Next. If you have not tested yet, Next runs the test first; click it again once the test has succeeded.
Design the card
Juristic's AI designs a card from the test response and shows a preview with the test matter's figures. Designing the card needs the firm's AI tools.
To change what the card shows, describe it in Custom instructions (optional), for example "Show work in progress and unbilled time at the top", and click Regenerate. Repeat until the card is right; nothing changes on the matters until you save.
Click Save. Every matter that follows the firm's layout now shows its own figures in the widget.
Who can change what
- Connections are shared. One connection can serve many widgets. If you change it, Juristic warns that you are editing a shared connection, and saving changes it for every widget that uses it.
- Only organisation admins create or change connections. Once a connection exists, a matter's managers can add a Financials widget to their own matter with Edit matter layout and choose the connection.
- The client secret stays hidden. When you edit an existing connection, leave Client secret blank to keep the current one.
- Every change is on record. Creating, changing and deleting a connection shows in the firm's audit trail; see check the firm's audit trail.
Tips from practice
- Check the matter numbers first. If a matter shows "We couldn't load this data", the matter number in Juristic most often does not match the one in the billing system. Correct it on the matter, or ask the billing team which number they use.
- One widget per question. A connection has one path, so costs and time entries from different calls need a connection each. The widget can be added more than once, so give each its own card.
- Literal values per matter. Where a parameter's source is Literal value, a matter's managers can change it on their matter with Edit values, the pencil on the card.
- Practice groups with their own layout. A group that has set its own layout for the role does not show the firm's widgets. See set what every matter overview shows for how the layouts follow each other, and set up the matter's front page for a single matter.
